Junk Food Blog

Excuse Me, Is This Seat Taken?

Posted by XUMO on Apr 11, 2017 5:22:48 PM

This week on the Junk Food Blog, we’re catching you up on all the latest and greatest (and some not so-greatest) happenings. We’ve got the Senate going “Nuclear” (not to be confused with the Syria Strikes, which you can catch up on, here) to officially approve Judge Neil Gorsuch’s appointment to the Supreme Court, and the secret that nobody knows (and by nobody, we mean everybody) to making the perfect grilled cheese for National Grilled Cheese Day. To continue the fun, we’ve got United Airline’s hot mess express of a month and the 2017 Masters champion that has been working for that title since the 90s. It’s new, it’s great and it’s all on XUMO! Enjoy everybody!

WATCH: Gorsuch Sworn in as 113th Supreme Court Justice

Remember that line in wedding vows that goes “Till death do us part”? Judge Neil Gorsuch certainly does. On Monday, he officially became BFFLs (best friends for life) with the Supreme Court and was sworn in as the 113th justice. Not kidding about the whole ‘for life’ part– justices serve no fixed term – they serve until their death (like Gorsuch’s predecessor Justice Antonin Scalia), retirement or conviction by the Senate. I know what you’re thinking, “Didn’t the Dems vehemently oppose Gorsuch?” Yes, good point! The GOP-led Senate went “Nuclear” (aka changed the rule book) so they no longer needed minority party support for a nominee to get the job and confirmed Gorsuch last week. After this bumpy, year-long road, this was a big win for Trump’s #squad and he not only praised the new justice at the swearing in, but also gave himself a figurative gold star for getting it done during his first 100 days in office. Click here to see how it all went down on the Reuters channel on XUMO.

WATCH: How to Make the Perfect Grilled Cheese

Sweet dreams are made of cheese, and, who am I to disagree?  Okay, that might not be how the song goes, but I also don’t disagree with this version, either. Wednesday is National Grilled Cheese day, and aside from our regularly cheesy jokes (What kind of music does cheese listen to?... R ‘n; Brie, obvi), we want to make sure you’re prepared with the know how to create the perfect grilled cheese. As Mom always says, “tryyy it, you’ll like it!!” And if you don’t, we know another fan favorite that goes well with cheese. It starts with ‘W’ and ends with ‘ine’ and our friends at Wine Oh TV coincidentally have a great channel on XUMO, too!

WATCH: United Airlines Passenger Dragged Off Flight

If there’s one group you’ve seen in the headlines more than Trump, it’s United Airlines. The company has given flight to the meaning “hot mess express” this month.  First, there was #leggingsgate when a United gate agent said ‘bye bye bye’ to two teenage girls wearing leggings and restricted their access to the plane because they were not dressed properly. Don’t get your leggings in a bunch too fast, the travelers were part of United’s employee pass program and had purchased tickets at a discounted rate. The fine print with those rates is a dress code that does not permit leggings. So, no, United Airlines is not judging your yoga pants. But, you can get the lowdown on that here courtesy of the TYT Channel on XUMO. More recently was the unsettling video footage taken on a United Airlines flight of security guards dragging a passenger off the plane by his hands and legs. Why in the world would they do that? Well, my friends, it has to do with a little thing they like to call overselling. Almost all major airlines oversell their flights to account for the inevitable no-shows but sometimes the bluff doesn’t work and everyone actually shows up. Like in this case. United asked for volunteers to give up their seats and when no one raised their hand, they randomly picked people to kick-off – kicking and screaming and all. Enter stage right, the internet wrath of a thousand suns on United, like the birth of the #NewUnitedAirlinesMottos hashtag.

WATCH: Sergio Garcia Wins The Masters

Alright, next we have a pop quiz for you. At what age are you considered a legal adult in the United States? How old do you have to be to vote? Ding ding ding, you guessed correctly (working off the honor code here), 18!! 18-years is also how long it took our new 2017 Masters Champion, Sergio Garcia, to win this sought-after title. This is one of those success stories that will set the standard for locker room pep talks and motivational fight songs for years to come. Five-years ago you could say that Garcia actually put the O in “hole in one’ and by that we mean he had 0 wins out of 73 previous Major appearances. At one point he even stated that he’d never have the skills to win a major. Queue some Karate Kid wax on, wax off action, and with a birdie on the first playoff hole we said goodbye Tiger, Hello Sergio!

This Week in the News on XUMO

Posted by XUMO on Mar 20, 2017 3:31:46 PM

This week on the Junk Food Blog, the headlines say it all. No hilarious videos of President Trump’s Ultimate March Madness Bracket or Grandma selfies—although we have those, too (check out the Funny or Die and FailArmy channels on XUMO)! Instead, we’re highlighting some pretty weighty news breaking this week and XUMO wants to make sure you have the information you need to understand what’s going on, formulate your own opinions, and then hide under the covers if that’s your choice (no judgment!). We’ve got the UK formally beginning the Brexit process, the NSA Director addressing allegations from President Trump that he was spied on by the UK, the FBI Director addressing allegations from President Trump that the President Obama administration spied on him, and Tom Brady’s stolen football jersey (valued at $500,000 and located thanks to the help of about $100 million in taxpayer resources). This is important stuff, and it’s all on XUMO. Happy Monday, everyone!

WATCH: UK Sets Date for Beginning of Brexit

Brexit is real. Brexit is happening. The process begins March 29. And now the UK gets it’s opportunity to play the part of the scorned lover with the power to take vengeance. Will they be kind, gentle and tender during the breakup? I’m going to go with a big fat NO on that one. But, hey, maybe they will rise above and look for the best possible end result for all involved. If not….LLLLLLLLLLLLLLET'S GET READY TO RUMBLLLLLEEEEEEEEEE! To learn more about how this will all begin to unfold on March 29 and where the proverbial dominos might fall, click here to watch it on the Veuer channel on XUMO.

WATCH: NSA Director Says He Didn’t Ask UK to Spy on Trump

Our relationship with British intelligence is arguably the strongest relationship the US has with any foreign service. Politically, the British are arguably our closest allies. It is inarguably illegal to ask a foreign country to spy on an American citizen. Simply put—this allegation is a big deal and it needs to be addressed. If the UK did spy on then presidential nominee Donald Trump, the fallout will impact global relationships and alliances in previously inconceivable ways. If it isn’t true, then this is the kind of fake news and fear mongering that can cause real damage to our society and destabilize the world as a whole. Either way, it’s important to hear what NSA Director Rogers has to say on this subject so we all know where the US intelligence community stands on the subject. Learn more by watching this video on XUMO’s Bloomberg channel.

WATCH: The Top Brady Jersey Thief

What do the New England Patriots, Houston Police Department, Texas Rangers (the law enforcement group, not the baseball team—I know, the lines are getting blurred here), Texas Lieutenant Governor and FBI all have in common? I’m so glad you asked. This, my friends, is a collective of individuals and organizations displaying a tremendous amount of synergy and focus to achieve something important for our country and utilizing national resources to get it done. No, they aren’t fixing healthcare, or taxes, or immigration, or…let me just stop you right there because you aren’t even close. They’ve found Tom Brady’s Super bowl jersey. Check out the story now on the Newsy channel because, let’s be honest, at this point we’ve heard so much about this jersey we’d all like to know how this thing is going to be resolved. Then, let’s collectively take solace in the fact that this can finally be over and the Texas Lieutenant Governor can get back to…really anything other than finding a football jersey.

WATCH: FBI Director Says There’s “No Evidence” Obama Wiretapped President Trump

Well, you can’t put the genie back in the bottle—or maybe you can. I have had very limited genie interaction and would not presume to know your genie-taming skills. Nonetheless, as soon as President Trump sent out that fateful tweet alleging the Obama administration wiretapped Trump Tower, you could feel the country moving to opposite sides of the argument. Whether you dismissed the claim out of hand or took it as the gospel truth, there’s a good chance anything FBI Director Comey says won’t change your mind at this point. However, there’s always value in at least hearing what our intelligence community has to say so take a few minutes to watch something that really matters today and check out this video from TIME broadcasting Director Comey’s remarks on the allegations.

Specials of the Week: Oscars 2017

Posted by XUMO on Feb 27, 2017 1:20:50 PM

This week on the Junk Food Blog, it’s post-Oscar’s pandemonium. La La Land got screwed, or Moonlight got screwed, or Warren Beatty got screwed? We’re so confused! Plus, Jimmy Kimmel takes up conducting to ensure Matt Damon knows he’s not welcome, blue is totally the new fashion trend on the red carpet and the Oscars mistake no one is talking about—but should! It’s all here on this week’s edition of the Junk Food Blog—WTF just happened at the Oscar’s edition!

WATCH: La La Land / Moonlight Debacle

Sooo that happened. Is it just me or are there a million and five questions in your head, too, as to what exactly went on here? Why were there two envelopes? Did they have both of them onstage? Why did we only see Bonnie and Clyde with one envelope when they walked out? Why did Warren Beatty decide it was okay to hijack even more of Moonlight’s time by going back on to explain what happened (and thereby opening this up to a thousand new questions)? Who was that guy who noticed and where exactly did he get the correct card from? So many questions! We don’t have the answers…yet! But, we do have some great reaction backstage as everyone tried to make sense of what they were seeing right along with all of us at home. You can check the clip out right here on the Reuters XUMO channel.

WATCH: Kimmel Plays Off Matt Damon

Whether he was in on this particular joke or not, we can’t say. One thing we can say for the record, however, is that Matt Damon is a national treasure and his reaction to Jimmy Kimmel literally trying to drown him out and play him off the stage while he attempted to deliver the nominees for who knows what category during the Oscar’s last night was perfect. He seemed flummoxed, flabbergasted, and, ultimately, defeated as he mercifully threw it to the video montage. The most underrated funny part of this whole exchange—Ben Affleck, who stood there trying not to burst out laughing at his buddy who was clearly not going to win this battle in the epic, unending beef/bromance between Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel. Watch Matt Damon fight the good fight on the TIME XUMO channel here.

Specials of the Week: Valentine's Day!

Posted by Fern Feistel on Feb 14, 2017 3:41:36 PM

This week on the Junk Food Blog, it’s the most romantic Tuesday night of the year! No, not Halloween, smart @$* (though that is on a Tuesday this year). It’s Valentine’s Day, people. Break out the chocolates because carbs don’t count today! They’re definitely going to count tomorrow but that’s tomorrow you’s problem. I’ll tell you what does count today—love. I’m talking good old-fashioned chocolate-covered strawberries and rich chocolate cake dessert love mixed with a little bit of science and pug bathing. Trust me, just go with it (and read the rest of the blog or else that’s not going to make any sense whatsoever). Happy Valentine’s Day!

Posted by XUMO on Jan 30, 2017 3:54:21 PM

This week on the Junk Food Blog, we’ve got you covered on all of the latest news and events going on in the world right now. We’ve got an excellent new series taking a deep dive into conflicts of interest and the new administration on Newsy, the goliaths of the tech space banding together on the new Trump immigration ban on Veuer, Trump’s latest executive order on Wochit and Mike Pence proclaiming that “Life is winning,” to a group of anti-abortion protesters. This just scratches the surface of the US and world news coverage on XUMO right now so head over when you have a chance and settle in for all the latest clips and analysis you need to see to stay informed.

COMING SOON: “Conflicted” Debuts on Newsy Feb 1

On February 1st, Newsy will be launching a new 22 minute special report entitled “Conflicted” to help you keep track of all the conflicts of interest facing the new administration. This administration is facing unprecedented conflicts of interest and potential for corruption to Washington. Through in-depth explanatory journalism and high-flying graphics, Newsy visualizes the international ethical minefield presented by an administration with far-reaching business interests. Watch the promo below.

WATCH: Tech Leaders Come Together on Trump Immigration Ban

What do Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Airbnb and Tesla all have in common besides a bajillion dollar valuation? They’ve all condemned Trump’s immigration ban. Are they just looking out for their own needs regarding foreign talent? Are they out of touch with the fears that some Americans share for terrorists entering the country? Or are they just performing their patriotic duty to stand up for America’s ideals as a nation that accepts immigrants from all walks of life? We can’t give you the answer but check out this video on Veuer and be informed to help you decide for yourself.

Specials of the Week: Inauguration Edition

Posted by XUMO on Jan 20, 2017 11:04:22 AM

This week on the Junk Food Blog, we bring you a bromance for the ages, psychic predictions of 2020 campaign messaging mixed with a nice horror movie homage, a guide to the inauguration and early days of the Trump presidency…and the funniest darn dog and cat videos 2017 has to offer (all two weeks of it!). And now we’ve just saved you 45 minutes of searching for something to watch on your TV guide, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go and whatever else you have lumped into your home TV entertainment bill this month—because this stuff is all free right here on XUMO. You can use that time to start learning a foreign language, begin tax season prep, get a workout in to work off some of that holiday weight (stupid Santa sugar cookies with the icing and sprinkles on top!), or you could just watch some more funny animal tug of war videos on The Pet Collective—yeah, we’re not opting for the workout, either. Enjoy the dog on dog tug of war!

WATCH: President Trump Bids Farewell to Obamas

There have been a lot of unanswered questions floating around such as, "Will President Trump take a different tone than President-Elect Trump once sworn in? Will he get rid of NATO? Who exactly are these people he’s filling his cabinet with?" But, before we find out answers to any of these questions, watch President Trump bid farewell to the former first family, the Obamas. Watch here on the Bloomberg Politics channel on XUMO.

WATCH: Donald Trump Reveals 2020 Campaign Slogan

Yes, you read that right. President Donald Trump has already locked in a campaign slogan for the next election cycle and he’s already telling people how great it will be. The slogan is, “Keep America Great!” and you’ve got to admire (or be confused by) the confidence of a man revealing that he plans to campaign based on the success he hasn’t yet had. It’s an interesting time in politics and Veuer has coverage of the new campaign slogan—years ahead of its time—here on XUMO. Oh, and by the way, if you’re thinking, “You know, I really think I’ve heard that slogan before!” You have. It’s from The Purge: Election Year—you know, the less than stellar sequel to The Purge, a horror film about a dystopian United States here the strong and the rich murder the poor and the weak one night a year just to get it out of their system. I’m not sure the films are meant to be aspirational but, hey, to each their own.

WATCH: Joe Biden’s Top 10 Moments

Let’s see here, so this week we have the inauguration of a new president who just about everyone has strong feelings about one way or the other, the exit of a president with some of the highest outgoing approval numbers in the past 40 years, the NFL conference championship games, the announced return of Will & Grace…and all we can focus on is the nostalgia of all the good times with Vice President Joe Biden. From his bromance with President Obama, to his aviator shades, to his use of the word “malarkey,” he will be missed by many across the political spectrum. Feeling nostalgic for Joe? Check out some of his top moments on Vanity Fair’s XUMO channel here.

It's been a busy week, so here's something to make you smile.

WATCH: 14 Funny Pet Videos 2017

There are A LOT of serious issues taking center stage this week and we at XUMO need a break. That’s why we’re running this new 2017 compilation of funny pet videos around the offices—why be up to date on the latest political news when you can watch a dog try to figure out how to deal with a lemon or a cat claim a laptop as her domain. So, take a break from the troubles of the real world and enjoy the struggles of a cute husky trying to catch a miniature racecar flying around the track on The Pet Collective’s XUMO channel!

Specials of the Week: Jan 9

Posted by XUMO on Jan 9, 2017 5:06:52 PM

Are you aware that CES just wrapped up and, according to what we saw there, robot cars are going to be controlling our lives in the very near future while we (virtually) walk around and kick bad guys with our pseudo-Birkenstock footwear? Have you prepared your Winter-Spring wardrobe according to the best and worst looks from the red carpet of The Golden Globes on Sunday night? Do you know enough about the NFL divisional round matchups this weekend to speak forcefully and indignantly to anyone who will listen that you know who the winner of the Packers/Cowboys game will be and anyone who disagrees with you is an absolute moron? Well, my friend, we’ve got all your bases covered with a very special first Junk Food Blog of the year. If you were worried about how you would keep up with the world without us, fear not! We’re back and ready to rock 2017 with the coolest, freest (should it be freeest? Eh, who knows) content from some of your favorite XUMO channels!

Mashable—Virtual Reality “Shoes”

Have you ever woken up in the morning with a burning desire to walk and kick…in virtual reality? Really? I thought it was just me! Walking IRL (in real life for those of you who haven’t reduced your vocabulary to acronyms) is just so 2016; let me get my action in on the VR! Mashable put together a cool video on the new Taclim shoes built for gamers who want to dedicate themselves to full immersion. And with a price tag of $1,000 for a pair of shoes that look like they offer very little in the way of functional support, you’d better get full immersion if you shell out for them!

You gon’ learn today! In this week’s edition of the XUMO Junk Food Blog, we learn that the brain uses 20 percent of our daily oxygen and caloric needs while representing just two percent of our mass, how to travel during the holidays like a pro, whether or not Tiger still has it and whether or not we’ve discovered the next American Ninja Warrior on FailArmy—we haven’t. Interested? Of course you are! Check out links to some of the past week’s best XUMO content below!

FailArmy—Fails of the Week

You aren’t truly up to date on your world news if you haven’t seen the most recent “Fails of the Week” compilation from FailArmy. This week, we have a guy who (for some reason) seems to be practicing throw his Christmas tree like a javelin, a cute kid letting it be known that receiving a can of soup for Christmas was NOT okay no matter how funny her dad thought it was, a guy who likely won’t be making it as an Olympic gymnast (although there is a certain degree of difficulty in somehow finding a way to land on top of the uneven bars) and the next American Ninja Warrior—or maybe just a guy who will be watching on TV.

Please accept our most sincere apologies for keeping you waiting this week for the latest and greatest content available on XUMO. You see, when you eat what feels like 27 pounds of turkey, cornbread, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries, apple pie—and did I mention gravy?—the food comma can last well into the following week. We’re not saying that’s what happened here, we’re just not saying that’s not what happened. With that said, welcome to a special “No Food Whatsoever Because We Can’t Stand the Sight of It,” edition of the XUMO Junk Food Blog!

JASH—The ArScheerio Paul Show: Vanilla Ice and Flavor Flav Interview Reenactment

Ever wondered what it would be like to watch Schmidt from New Girl reenact a 1991 Arsenio Hall interview with Vanilla Ice? Of course you have. And it’s even better than you’ve imagined it! Add in a little Flavor Flav and it’s almost too much to handle…almost. Disclaimer—If you’re hoping to watch this and gain better insight into Vanilla Ice’s improbable rise to fame, there isn’t a video on the planet that can you with that (just be grateful for the comedy!). Big thanks to JASH, one of XUMO’s latest channels, for the awesome Schmidt/Vanilla Ice mash up we’ve never knew we always wanted!

Specials of the Week: Thanksgiving

Posted by XUMO on Nov 22, 2016 3:31:22 PM

It’s almost Black Friday’s Eve—or, as some of you may still remember it from the good ol’ days, Thanksgiving. Before you strap on those trusty Thanksgiving pants with the elastic waistband to help maximize your pumpkin pie intake, take a moment to head over to XUMO. We’ve got you covered with delectable dessert recipes, ideas for what to do with your leftovers and invaluable advice for how to discuss politics with your loved ones during the holiday. Happy Thanksgiving from the XUMO team!

The Onion—How to Discuss Politics with Your Loved Ones

Just when we thought the election was over and we could go a week without discussing politics, something horrible happens…family comes over for Thanksgiving. And in every family there are invariably a few (or more) crazies. And the kookier your beloved Crazy Aunt Helen is, the more vocal she’s going to be about her political views. Not to worry! The Onion has been kind enough to put together some tips for discussing politics with family this holiday season with gems like “Regularly remind yourself not to let political differences affect your personal relationships with your family. That’s the job of your grandfather’s estate.” and “Begin any counterpoint by irately screaming ‘I respectfully disagree!’ inches from your loved one’s face.” With tips like these, what could go wrong?

*By reading this paragraph, you have agreed not to blame XUMO for your family’s inevitable falling out this Thanksgiving!
