Here's What's New

It’s Getting Hot in Here

Posted by XUMO on May 22, 2017 9:16:49 PM

There is only one word to describe the Junk Food Blog  this week; HOT. Not only are the temps rising here in Southern California, but things are heating up politically as Trump continues on his first foreign trip as POTUS. We’re firing up our grills in preparation for Memorial Day Weekend barbeques, and H-O-T (or haute) is an accurate descriptor for the outfits we saw on the red(hot) carpet at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards this past weekend. We’ve got the videos and cheesy commentary, so bring a glass of water and a mini-fan and let’s dive on in!

WATCH: Trump In Saudi Arabia: 'This Is Not A Battle Between Different Faiths'

President Trump left for his first foreign trip this past weekend, olive branch in one hand, and Melania’s hand in the other. First on the itinerary was Saudi Arabia, where he spoke to the leaders of several Muslim countries. In his speech, Trump called for the Muslim world to come together and drive out terrorism. He cited that the battle against Islamic extremism is not a battle between different faiths, but rather barbaric criminals. Click here, to watch more on his speech. Next, he heads on over to Israel to talk peace between Palestine and Israel. Interesting timing considering the recent faux pas he made by leaking highly classified information to Russia that could cause some pretty heavy damage between the US and Israel. Relationship status officially changed to: Isreal-ly complicated. Watch more on this, here, via the TYT channel on XUMO.

WATCH: Backyard BBQ

Put another shrimp on the barbie! That’s what we’ll be saying this weekend as we slip-n-slide buns first into three work-free days of barbeque bliss. This Memorial Day Weekend, we’re dusting off the ol’ grill (click here to learn how), and throwing a sizzling backyard BBQ. Chances are, we’re not the only ones with this sun-and-fun filled idea, so if you’re in need of some inspiration, you’ve come to the right place! This video will guide you through setting up a colorful mix-and-match table setting AND will also give you recipes for grilled turkey burgers, salmon, zucchini, and pineapple. #Jackpot. But wait, it keeps getting better. Check out this video for a recipe on how to make bacon-wrapped hot dogs, courtesy of Epicurious. The only thing we ask is you practice safe-grilling. Normally we fully support droppin’ it like it’s hot, but in the case of barbecuing PLEASE take caution and do NOT drop it like it’s hot...onto the ground (like that guy). Aside from challenging each other to hot dog eating contests, we’ll also be taking some time to honor those who have served our country, those who continue to serve; and most of all, to those we have lost. Cheers to all of you!

WATCH: The Best Looks from the 2017 Billboard Awards

“Hello?” That’s what Adele says when that hotline bling. This past weekend was the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, and as the top male artist, Drake took home 13 awards, surpassing Adele’s previous record of 12. I’m sure by next year it will all be water under the bridge. In other awards news, Queen Bey won Top Female Artist, and Cher gave a “I have goosebumps this is so good” type of performance. Although this awards show is technically about honoring those artists whose music is off the charts, it always results in everyone making a bigger deal out of whose outfit was off the charts. So, without further ado, feast your eyes on the best looks from the 2017 Billboard Awards, brought to you by Vanity Fair on XUMO.

Cyberattacks and Missiles, and Warriors, Oh My!

Posted by XUMO on May 15, 2017 5:45:16 PM

What’s cookin’ good lookin?! Ready to hear about what’s goin’ on around town? This week on the Junk Food Blog, we’re going cyber and hopefully won’t make you WannaCry (grab your tissues just in case). We’re presenting our first political mash-up on the recent political landscape, giving you an update on the first part of the NBA Western Conference Finals, and practicing our pageant wave while we grace you with videos on the newest Miss USA. We’ve also added in some completely random Game Of Thrones references, because we’re having a really hard time waiting until July for the new season and just GOTta have some Game of Thrones in our life. Let the games begin!

WATCH: What to Know About the Global Ransomware Attack

You’re makin’ me WannaCry.  What your mom said when she got the beautiful flowers you sent for Mother’s Day...or what over 150 countries said when they found out that a large group of hackers successfully cyber attacked everyone’s computers this weekend. This was not the time to be PC, and I’m not talking about being politically correct. Thousands of Microsoft Windows systems were sent emails with hidden malicious malware, (named WannaCry), that would lock all the files on the computer. At that point, the hackers would then request people cough up a whole lotta’ cash money in exchange for their data. (Paging Tim Cook, we’ve got a new TV ad for you). Most notably, this massive cyberattack affected England’s health organization as well as Germany’s rail service and even FedEx here in the US. If reading about this is makin’ you WannaCry, then here’s a video that will tell you everything you need to know about the attack. The icing on the cake? It’s rumored to get worse.. DUN DUN DUNNNNN.

WATCH: James Clapper: U.S. Government is 'Under Assault' After James Comey Firing

Welcome to our first political mash-up! No, unfortunately we haven’t created a video of singing politicians, although you can find one of Steve Bannon, here, courtesy of Funny or DieInstead, I’m going to stay short and sweet with the political updates for this week, and mash them all up into one section for ya! Save the clapping until the end, please. Speaking of, did you catch James Clapper’s interview this past weekend? The former director of the National Intelligence had a few things to say about the layoff of FBI Director James Comey, and let’s just say he is not giving Trump a round of applause for the controversial decision to let Comey go. Watch more on what he had to say, here. Also, since when is it a prerequisite to be named James with a last initial of “C”  in order to become a director of a governmental organization? Maybe James Corden will consider it someday.. In other weekend news, North Korea is still playing with fire. Our wildling friends North of the wall launched a ballistic missile that landed near Russia. Here’s, what Putin had to say. Just kidding. But really, here's what he actually had to say about this.

WATCH: Warriors Beat Spurs in Game 1 of Western Conference Finals

Now that we’ve talked about what’s going on in the North, let’s move to the West(eros). The NBA Western Conference finals started on Sunday, and the Warriors came back from a 25-point deficit to defeat the Spurs. Before you bring out the bubbly,  check out what our friends at Undisputed on FOX Sports have to say about the match-up. Sounds like these Warriors might have an achilles heel.

WATCH: Scientist Kara McCullough Crowned Miss USA 2017

Elbow, elbow, wrist, wrist, wipe a tear, blow a kiss! Oh hey, didn’t see you there; just practicing my acceptance of the crown, although it’s looking a little more Gracie Hart and less Kara McCullough. Last Sunday was the Miss USA pageant, and for the first time in history, the contestants from Washington DC have won the crown, (to the seven kingdoms), 2-years in a row. Watch out Khaleesi. Kara McCullough is a scientist working for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and is planning on spending her reign promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). You go, glen coco. Learn more about the newest Miss USA, here.

Political Shots Fired

Posted by XUMO on May 10, 2017 5:32:19 PM

Soo, we’re really glad you’re here! It’s one of those ‘glass half full’ kind of weeks and despite some of the chaos ensuing (which we’ll tell you about later, promise) we’re celebrating the simple fact that it’s almost Friday and that we get to eat tacos for dinner, while watching the Summer Pets compilation that’s included as a Junk Food Blog guest appearance below. In other Junk Food Blog news, we’re brushing off our Rosetta Stone discs to tell you all about the new Président of France, and the reemergence of the US of A’s 44th president (hint: starts with “O”, ends in “Bama”). Then, we’re going to review Mustang Sally Yates’ testimony re: Russian interference in the US election (yes, still a thing), and the FBI sans a director. The best part about all of this? It’s ALL on XUMO, and have we ever mentioned it’s free? Because it is.

WATCH: Emmanuel Macron Wins France's Presidency

Voulez-vous voter pour moi?”  “Oui!” That is the CliffsNotes version of what went down in France over the weekend. For those of you who are not fluent in French (don’t worry, we’re not either), a quick Google Translate will confirm that France said “YES” to Emmanuel Marcron’s proposal to be team captain (aka France’s next President). Need a little refresher? We thought you’d never ask! France hit the polls on April 23rd and voted between a whopping 11 candidates. None of the candidates got a standing O (aka received over 50% of the vote) which, by French law, requires OT (aka a second round “runoff”) between the top two candidates. For the last two weeks, the final two candidates- Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Marcron -have been campaigning to win the hearts and minds of the French people; and a little thing we like to call, control of the country. Le Pen is anti-immigration and pro “Frexit”, and Macron is, well, exactly the opposite. After leading his opponent by more than 20 percentage points in the polls pre-election, Macron ended up pulling out the W...but not without a few campaign hacks. Find out what happened, here.

WATCH: Obama’s Speech to GOP Lawmakers on Healthcare

The ghosts of presidents past is real, and is happening. Maybe not in the undead way, but #ICYMI, Obama is back. Aside from hinting at what his plans are next, he is also going to bat, in as PC a way as possible, for his legacy. Last week, the House voted to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (#TeamObama) with the American Health Care Act (#TeamTrump). Missed it? Don’t worry (be happy), you can find out more about what this will entail, here.  Now that the House passed their bill, it’s the Senate’s turn. It’s one of the hottest issues on everyone’s mind right now and will have a major impact on millions of lives, which is why Obama brought it up this past weekend. While accepting the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, Obama delivered a powerful message directed at GOP lawmakers on the topic of, yep, you guessed it, healthcare. Watch more on Obama’s speech, here.

WATCH: Sally Yates' Testimony Before the Senate Judiciary Committee

Don’t let these next videos go Flynn one ear and out the other, because you’re going to want to pay attention. On Monday, former US Attorney General, Sally Yates, testified in front of a Senate committee confirming that Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser to Trump, did in fact discuss sanctions with Russia and the opportunity for them to be lifted under the new Trump administration. We know it feels like you’ve been hearing about this since Vietnam, but this time it’s REALLY important because Monday’s testimony was the first time it has been publicly confirmed that all of the allegations are true. Before we mic drop, take a look at Sally’s opening statement, here. Then, we’ve still got more for you! Watch part of her testimony, here.

WATCH: Trump Fires FBI Director James Comey

Tuesday night, President Trump said, “ya fired” to FBI director, James Comey, and handed him a pink slip. You probably remember Comey as the guy investigating Hil’s emails right around the election, and more recently, as the guy leading the investigation on whether or not Trump’s campaign had anything to do with Russian interference in the election. With Comey out of the picture, Trump is dusting off the ol’  job description and buying a bunch of “Help Wanted” signs to find Comey’s replacement.  Despite the country being deeply polarized on just about everything right now, most lawmakers are in agreeance that the next head of the FBI should proobbbably be an independent. Check out the Newsy Channel on XUMO for more details on Comey’s dismissal.
